Re: [greentrans] FW: Local transit

My concern is frequency of service. Unless this can be brought down to 10 mins max. bus use within Oakville will not be an option most Oakville citizens would consider, all things being equal - i.e. availability of a car and holding a current license.

Hi Lisa,

I am doing a short, private study with an aim at finding ways to improve
local public transit.

Could you please send your GreenTrans contacts a request to send me their
ideas?

I would like to receive some brief comments, suggestions for improvement,
criticisms, or questions about local public transit in Oakville. This should
include broader general matters of general concern (price, communications,
reliability, routes, frequency of service, etc.) rather than items that are
too narrow though specific examples to illustrate a concern (e.g.,
convenience) may be helpful to me.

Thanks,

Brian

Open House
Wednesday, May 16

6:30–9 p.m.

Town Hall, 1225 Trafalgar Road

Committee rooms 1 and 2

Open house — 6:30–7 p.m. & 8:30–9 p.m.

Project presentation — 7–7:40 p.m.

Open discussion — 7:40–8:30 p.m.

At this second public open house, an evaluation of the alternative solutions
will be presented. You will have an opportunity to have your say on how we
change and improve our transportation system — getting us closer to our goal
of being the most livable town in Canada.

Switching Gears (the town's Transportation Master Plan update) will result
in a practical, long-term action plan to guide the development of the town's
transportation system to meet the needs of planned growth. This study will
define existing problems/opportunities, consider and evaluate solutions, and

will identify an optimum transportation system to the year 2031. To comply
with the Environmental Assessment Act, the study is being conducted in
accordance with the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) process.

Following the open house, the next step in the process will be to finalize
the preferred transportation strategy taking into account comments that will
be received from stakeholders and the public. A final report on the study
findings will be presented to Town Council later this summer.

If you have any questions related to this study or wish to be added to our
mailing list for updates on Switching Gears, please contact:

… Oakville won a Bronze Bicycle Friendly Communities Award at the Ontario
Bike Summit. Chris Clapham, from the Town, and I accepted the award from
the Minister of Transportation, Bob Chierelli and Eleanor McMahon from Share
the Road.

Chris did an outstanding job with the application – it was really quite
something all the detail required and just how much we have done. So very
much more to still do though, so now we need to Strive for Silver!!!

HEN NEWS
  • HEN and our HHEAT project are participating in a big event this weekend in Georgetown.  The Earth Day Fair and Solar Tour will be held on Saturday, April 28. The fair is at the Georgetown Market Place Mall, 280 Guelph St. at Mountainview Blvd., from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., more information below.
  • HEN’s Networking Dinner and Annual General Meeting will be held on Tues. May 29 at The Grand Chalet on Steeles Ave. in Milton. Tickets for the Italian buffet dinner are $20 for members, $30 for non-members until Friday, May 11.  We are looking forward to an engaging evening, with Peter Love, former Chief Conservation Officer of Ontario as our guest speaker, and plenty of networking time.  Tickets can be purchased online or by visiting our booth at any of the above events.
  • For more information, email HEN at info@haltonenvironment.ca
  • HEN particpated in BurlingtonGreen's Eco-Celebration that followed thier city-wide clean-up green-up event this past Saturday. A record number of participants (more than 8000!) signed up this year to join in the collective effort to keep Burlington beautiful, and we were pleased to see such a strong turnout at the city hall celebration in spite of the cold weather. The event was an important way of thanking the many participants who volunteered their time and effort to clean up our city and an opportunity for exhibitors to gain exposure to a very targeted group of citizens and groups in Burlington!

HALTON AND EARTH DAY NEWS
  • Halton Hills is holding their Earth Day Fair + Solar Tour this Saturday at Georgetown Market Place Mall from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The fair will have a bunch of activities to celebrate Earth Day such as:
    • Mountsberg's Birds of Prey exhibit
    • Environmental groups displays
    • Interactive children's activities
    • Green tours and more
  • The Solar Tour:
    • Three homes in Georgetown will be displaying their new solar PV systems. Talk with HEN staff, vendors Eco Alternative EnergySolargy Solutions, and Solar Direct Canada, and homeowners to find out what's involved in getting a solar installation.
    • Pick up directions at the HEN booth for the self-guided solar tour, which runs between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. Solar vendors and HHEAT staff will be on the tour to provide descriptions and answer questions.
  • The solar tour is part of a series of Green Leadership tours that day.
  • All across Halton individuals participated in their local municipal Earth Day clean ups in an attempt to help protect the environment.
    • Tim Hortons cleans up. On Friday, April 20, employees at Tim Hortons head office in Oakville spent 20 minutes picking up garbage and debris in and around Wyecroft Road.
    • Burlington cleanup. The BurlingtonGreen event provides an opportunity for residents, schools, groups and businesses to team up to clean up the city. Almost 6,500 people signed up, however more individuals participated.
    • Oakville clean up. Community members gathered in 33 sites around Oakville during a grey Saturday morning to take part in the 21st annual Earth Week Clean Up of Nature Sites.
  • The five posts in the My Sustainable Day-Cation in Burlington are all online now. The posts in chronological order are about cycling, green buildings, local food, waste, and youth and engagement. They provide a good overview about several sustainable initiatives taking place in Burlington.
  • For Earth Day this year, Whole Foods Market has announced that they will no longer carry red-rated wild-caught fish in their seafood departments. A red rating indicates that a species is suffering from overfishing or that current fishing methods harm other marine life or habitats.

OTHER NEWS
  • Toronto’s chief medical officer wants the city to cut speed limits to 30 kilometres per hour on residential streets and 40 kilometres per hour on other streets, to reduce the severity of injuries to pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Portland, Oregon, with the highest rate of bicycle commuting in the U.S., is moving to increase bicycle use as more cost-effective than expanding roads for car use.
  • According to the Toronto Star, the Ontario Liberals have buried several proposed changes in their new budget bill that strike at the heart of Ontario’s Endangered Species Act.
  • The Ontario Clean Air Alliance has analyzed the province’s plan to cut costs in the electricity sector. The plan is to merge the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) and the Independent Electricity Sector Operator (IESO), saving 1% of total costs, and to search for ways of reducing costs in the electricity distribution companies. However, the electricity generation companies are responsible for 80% of the costs in the sector.
  • The Ontario Ministry of Environment is proposing to exempt waste haulers transporting hazardous waste from the requirement to obtain a license before commencing their operation. This exemption will also apply to transboundary waste haulers.
  • The federal government is reducing the number of environmental review bodies from 40 to 3; those three are the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, the National Energy Board and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. The fixed timelines for environmental reviews for major economic projects will be:
    • 24 months for review panels under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act
    • 18 months for projects under the National Energy Board Act
    • 12 months for "standard" assessments
  • The federal government is planning to overhaul the Fisheries Act to reduce federal protection of fish habitats, saying it will focus on "vital" waterways that are home to important species.
  • Scientists have for the first time mapped the groundwater aquifers across Africa and found large reserves in the North African countries of Libya, Algeria, Egypt and Sudan. However, large scale extraction could quickly deplete the reservoirs, containing water up to 25,000 years old.

To: 905-area Community Association leaders

Transportation issues have been at the forefront of the news in Toronto lately. Those in the 905 area have it worse but have been getting much less attention. In fact, there is province-wide frustration on this topic.

Five grassroots organizations have decided to do something about it. You may have already heard about this event from one of the organizing partners. It is called:

Moving Forward: a Public Forum on Transportation

Date & Time: Saturday, May 12 , 2012 1:00 PM

Location: Markham Council Chambers, Markham, Ontario

Cost: $0 (but you must register- see below)

The event is shaping up as a lightning rod to advance transportation infrastructure and funding. Attached is a flyer and the Agenda.

The Forum will feature high profile speakers and panelists with recognized expertise.  Community leaders, elected officials and transportation expects are already confirmed attendees. You will hear how badly we need new transportation, what the current plans are, what the options are to fund and sustain the necessary investments and what we can learn from others who are succeeding.

This will be an interactive Forum with the speakers and panelists. You will have several opportunities to have your questions answered and your views known. More details are available at:

www.urbanneighbourhoods.ca

Seating is limited and attendance is by online registration only. We are giving community leaders an early opportunity to pre-register. You can do so by clicking:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/moving-forward

Please let others in your organization know about this important event.

To contact the organizers, email movingforwardforum@gmail.com

We hope to see you in Markham. Help us spread the word.

This Forum is being produced by the following organizations:

Federation of Urban Neighbourhoods of Ontario (F.U.N.) - an umbrella group connected with over 500 neighbourhood associations across the province

OTHER NEWS
  • Federal Minister of Natural Resources Joe Oliver has announced major changes to environmental assessment in Canada, which has environmentalists worried.
  • Environmental Defence is watching a request by TransCanada PipeLines/Enbridge Gas for their pipeline which runs from Sarnia to Montreal. The request is to allow the flow to be reversed and the pressure to be increased, in order to be able to transport the heavier tar sands products. For more information visit TransCanada and  Environmental Defence.
  • The Ontario Clean Air Alliance is not happy with the appointment of Murray Elston, former president of the Canadian Nuclear Association, to review Ontario’s electricity sector.
  • Testing done on snapping turtle road kill in Ontario found most of the creatures to be a toxic soup of PCBs and mercury, according to Ontario Nature Staff Ecologist John Urquhart. Opponents of the Ontario Snapping Turtle hunt say the population cannot withstand the combined pressures of pollution, cars, disappearing habitat and hunting, given their low rate of reproduction.
  • The Québec government has announced that $60 million will be used to develop greenbelts in Montréal and Québec City
  • Canadian environmentalist David Suzuki has resigned from the David Suzuki Foundation board following worries that his opinions could endanger the foundation's charitable status under new federal scrutiny.
